Affiliate Disclosure
Transparency is one of our core values at The Upgrade Ledger. This page explains our affiliate relationships, how we earn revenue, and — most importantly — how that does and does not influence what we write.
The short version: Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. Our recommendations are based on genuine research and honest opinion. We never rank or recommend a product solely because it pays a higher commission.
1. What Is an Affiliate Link?
An affiliate link is a specially tracked URL that lets a retailer or affiliate network know that a visitor came from our site. When you click an affiliate link and complete a qualifying purchase, we receive a small commission from the seller. The price you pay is identical to what you would pay if you navigated to the retailer directly — affiliate commissions are paid by the retailer, not added to your purchase price.
2. Programs We Participate In
We participate in a number of affiliate advertising programs, which may include but are not limited to:
- Amazon Associates — as an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases made through Amazon links on this site
- ShareASale — a network connecting us with various brand affiliate programs
- Impact — another affiliate network through which we may work with individual brands
- Commission Junction (CJ) — a third-party affiliate network
- Direct brand affiliate programs — we may also work directly with individual brands outside of networks
This list may change over time as we add or remove affiliate partnerships. The absence of a specific program from this list does not mean we do not participate in it.
3. How We Identify Affiliate Links
In keeping with FTC guidelines and our commitment to transparency, affiliate links on this site may be identified by:
- A disclosure notice at the top or bottom of articles containing affiliate links
- The presence of tracking parameters in the URL (e.g. affiliate tags, referral codes)
- This standalone Affiliate Disclosure page, linked from our footer
We do not currently mark every individual affiliate link with a visual indicator, but this disclosure applies site-wide: assume that product links on this site may be affiliate links.
4. How Affiliate Revenue Affects Our Editorial Process
This is the part we want to be especially clear about.
Affiliate relationships do not determine our rankings or recommendations. Our editorial process is:
- Research-first. We evaluate products based on specifications, real user feedback, expert opinions, and where possible, hands-on testing — before we consider whether an affiliate relationship exists.
- Commission-blind ranking. We do not rank products higher because they carry a higher commission rate. A product that earns us nothing will outrank one that earns us a lot if it is the genuinely better choice for our readers.
- No pay-to-play. We do not accept payment from brands to be featured, reviewed, or ranked. If a brand wants to advertise on the site, that is handled separately from editorial content and is clearly labeled as such.
- Honest pros and cons. Every guide includes honest drawbacks alongside positives. If a product is not right for a particular reader, we say so.
Affiliate commissions allow us to keep this site free, fund our research, and continue producing independent content. We believe that being honest with our readers is what sustains long-term trust — and that is worth more to us than a short-term commission.
5. FTC Compliance
This disclosure is provided in compliance with the United States Federal Trade Commission’s guidelines on endorsements and testimonials in advertising (16 CFR Part 255). These guidelines require that material connections between publishers and the products they recommend be clearly disclosed to readers.
If you have questions about FTC guidelines, you can learn more at ftc.gov.
6. Free Products & Sponsored Content
Occasionally, brands may provide free products for review purposes. When this occurs, we will disclose it clearly within the relevant article. The receipt of a free product does not guarantee a positive review — we will share our honest assessment regardless. We do not currently publish paid sponsored content. If this changes, any sponsored posts will be clearly labeled as such.
7. Prices & Availability
Product prices and availability listed on this site are accurate as of the date of publication but are subject to change at any time. Always verify the current price directly with the retailer before purchasing. We are not responsible for pricing discrepancies between what is shown on this site and what is charged at checkout.
